Awards for Excellence

Iqbal Sacranie

Iqbal Sacranie receiving the award said: “It was a very pleasant surprise to receive this esteem award for two particular reasons. Firstly, it is in the name of such a great personality who is greatly admired for his outstanding courage and compassion during the conflict in Bosnia. Secondly, it represents recognition from the ordinary members of the community.”

Iqbal Sacranie is the founding secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain. A businessman based in Malden, Surrey, he was the joint convenor of the UK Action Committee on Islamic Affairs, which was set up to coordinate the Muslim response to the publication of The Satanic Verses. He played a significant part in the campaign for the inclusion of the religion question in Census 2001. Sacranie has been awarded an OBE for his services to Muslims in Britain.
