New age of political cooperation welcomed

The Muslim News congratulates the painstaking efforts made by Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to tackle "some deep and pressing problems – a huge deficit, deep social problems and a political system in need of reform."

“Cameron’s pledge to put aside party differences and to work for the ‘common good and national interest’ must be welcomed”, said Editor of The Muslim News, Ahmed J Versi.

"Clegg also expressed hope that it would be the ‘start of the new politics I have always believed in - diverse, plural, where politicians of different persuasions come together, overcome their differences in order to deliver good government for the sake of the whole country’."

“This spirit of cooperation rather than confrontation has the potential of marking a new age of ending much of the damaging tribalism seen in British politics,” Versi said.

The Muslim News notes both the Tory and Lib Dem commitment to civil liberties and trust that it will be put into effect for the benefit of community relations. This includes both Cameron and Clegg acknowledging that the need to review the Prevent Violent Extremism programme that has caused so much damage to relations with the Muslim community.
