Palestine: PA complains to Security Council about Israel ceasefire violation
25-11-2012
The Palestinian Authority’s UN observer has submitted a complaint to the UN Security Council after Israeli forces violated an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, according to Palestine’s Ma’an news agency.
The Israeli army killed one person and injured 19 at the Gazan border area near Khan Younis on Friday, breaking a two-day old ceasefire between the Jewish state and the Strip.
The ceasefire, put into effect Wednesday night, detracts Israel’s classification of the Gazan border area as a “buffer zone”, forbidding Israel from firing at the border area.
Permanent observer of Palestine to the UN Riyad Mansour confirmed to reporters that the complained had been filed.
On Thursday, medics said four Palestinians were wounded by Israeli fire near a fence at the Gazan border. An Israeli army spokesman claimed 200 Palestinians approached the fence and “began rioting” before causing damage to the fence.
Wednesday’s ceasefire deal ended a brutal Israeli offensive on the coastal strip, which left 170 Palestinians dead. Palestinian parties in the strip retaliated with rocket fire that hit multiple Israeli towns, including commercial centers Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, attacked by rockets for the first time since 1970.
