Egupt: One killed, 155 injured in Port Said clashes

09-03-2013

CAIRO, (Xinhua): One person died Friday after being injured in clashes between security forces and anti- government protesters in Egypt's turmoil-hit seaside governorate of Port Said, Egyptian Health Ministry's spokesman told Xinhua.

The spokesman, Ahmed Omar, said the victim is a 33-year-old man called Karim al-Sayed. His body has been sent to the morgue of Ismailia Hospital.

The spokesman revealed that 155 people were injured in similar clashes that started Thursday afternoon and are still ongoing in Cairo and other governorates.

"Among the injured people were 141 in Port Said, eight in Gharbiya and six in Cairo," Omar said, pointing out that most of them have been discharged after recovery and only 12 are still receiving treatment.

The Suez Canal governorate of Port Said has been witnessing violent clashes between protesters and security forces since Jan. 26, after a court sentenced 21 defendants from Port Said to death over last year's soccer riots that killed over 70 fans, mostly from Cairo.

In response, Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew in the Suez Canal governorates of Port Said, Ismailia and Suez for 30 days, which drew protests from local residents.

Egypt's police withdrew from Port Said on Friday, while the military took over the responsibility of security.

The latest development came ahead of a court ruling scheduled for March 9 over last year's soccer riots.
