Iraq: Bomb attacks against Shi'a pilgrims kill 21 across the country
29-11-2012
BAGHDAD, (Xinhua, The Musilm News): A total of 20 people were killed and more than 40 wounded in two bomb attacks targeted Shi'a pilgrims in south of Baghdad on Thursday, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.
The deadliest attack occurred in the city of Karbala, some 110 km south of Baghdad, when a booby-trapped car went off near Shiite pilgrims at the eastern entrance of Karbala, the source said on condition of anonymity.
Iraqi security forces blocked the roads to central Karbala which leads to the shrine of Imam Hussein, one of the 12 Shiite most revered Imams.
Meanwhile, another attack took place in southeast of Karbala when two roadside bombs detonated near Shiite pilgrims in the city of Hilla, some 100 km south of Baghdad, killing one pilgrim and wounding 18 others, the source said.
Insurgent groups frequently carried out attacks against Shiite pilgrims who were performing communal rituals, killing and wounding hundreds of people in attempts to provoke sectarian strife in the country
