Issue 284, Friday 28 December 2012 - 14 Safar 1434 Palestine-Israel defending the indefensible Sir, Michelle Moshelian defends the indefensible ingeniously. There is not the space to set the record straight point by point. Suffice it to say that it is Israel in occupation of Palestine [and not Palestinians occupying Israel], a fact recognised internationally - even by America and Britain, the two countries most responsible for creating and sustaining a homeland for White Jews in the heart of the Arab world. As an occupying power Israel is bound by international laws to care for the welfare of the people in the lands it occupies. Withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 does not absolve Israel from its obligations for the well being of the people living there. As the world saw in 2008-09 when newly developed incendiary bombs were used, Gaza is now the testing ground for Israeli military’s weapons industry. It will benefit Michelle if she were to read the recently published ‘The General’s Son’ by Miko Peled and perhaps Benny Morris’ original research into the destruction and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1947-48. I am hoping to be in West Bank early in January. If Michelle Moshelian is interested, I will be delighted to meet her for an exchange of views. Yours, M A Qavi London Sir, I agree totally with your Editorial on Israel-Palestine. You are right. Israel must vacate ALL the lands it has occupied in 1987. They must allow ALL Palestinian refugees right to return to their homeland, including to Israel. But as you rightly pointed out, Israel will not accept this and wants most of the occupied territories under its jurisdiction. They are creating facts on the ground by building new illegal settlements on Palestinian land so that when there are any negotiations Palestinians, instead of getting all its land will be given only part of the land. Israel and the West will say and do say to the Palestinians, look Israel is giving up so much land, so should Palestinians. No one is saying Israel is NOT giving up any of its land. It is Palestinian land. The West talks about justice and respect for international law. But when it comes to Muslim land, it goes out of the window. Yours, Aisha Khan London
