Kyrgystan: Otunbayeva sworn in as caretaker president of Kyrgyzstan

03-07-2010

BISHKEK, (Xinhua): Kyrgyzstan's interim leader Roza Otunbayeva was sworn in as the violence-hit country's caretaker president on Saturday and will serve until Dec. 31, 2011.

"The government will govern the country in a democratic way," she said, adding that the interim government will maintain its good neighborly and friendly ties with countries.

The swearing-in of Otunbayeva came one-day after the Central Election Commission announced that the country's new constitution had been overwhelmingly approved by a nationwide referendum held last Sunday.

The new constitution envisages a parliamentary democracy by diminishing presidential powers and gives legitimacy to the interim government that took power after former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in April.

Otunbayeva also expressed her gratitude towards the international community for the support and aid provided after riots hit the country.

The ex-foreign minister took power after a mass protest in the capital city ousted former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev in April. The Central Asian nation has then been immersed in riots until the situation came under control recently.
