Pakistan: 3 killed by US drone attack in South Waziristan Agency

30-11-2012

WANA, (The News): Three persons were killed and four others sustained injuries when a US drone hit a vehicle in Barmal tehsil in South Waziristan Agency, local sources said on Thursday.

The sources said the drone fired missiles at a moving vehicle in Shin Warsak, sited about 10 kilometres from Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan. “Three charred bodies were retrieved from the rubble of the destroyed vehicle,” a local source said, adding that the injured were taken to a private health facility in the area. The condition of two of the injured was stated to be critical.

The vehicle was destroyed in the attack, the sources said, adding that tribesmen in the area rushed to the site and launched rescue activities. There were conflicting reports about the target of the drone. Some reports claimed that those killed and injured in the attack were local tribesmen. Locals claimed that none of the dead or injured was a foreigner.

Other reports claimed that the US drone targeted the vehicle of militants from the local groups led by Maulvi Nazeer, who earlier in the day was injured in a suicide bombing in Wana town. It was reported that his men came out in the open in large numbers after the suicide bombing and thus became an easy target for the drone. The US spy planes kept flying in the area after the attack causing fear and delaying rescue work at the site of the missile attack.
