Philippine leftist rebels kill 9 people

27-01-2013

MANILA, (Xinhua): Nine people, including a policeman and village officials, were killed in an attack by suspected New People's Army rebels in the central Philippine province of Negros Occidental on Sunday, local police said.

The policemen and village officials were assaulted after they walked out from a village party around 4 a.m. Sunday in La Castellana town, said Rico Santotome, spokesman for the provincial police.

Santotome said the policeman and the village officials, along with civilians, were aboard a Canter truck when the rebels flagged down. The armed men asked some children to disembark from the vehicle before opening fire, killing nine people.

He said the security forces have been sent to the area to conduct pursuit operations against the perpetrators.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for more than four decades. Military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country.
