US: Two schools on lockdown after high school student commits suicide with firearm

05-02-2013

HOUSTON, (Xinhua): Two public schools in the U.S. state of Oklahoma were placed on lockdown Monday after a high school student killed himself with a firearm, local media reported.

Police confirmed that Coweta High School and Coweta Intermediate High School, in a suburb of the Oklahoma city of Tulsa, were on lockdown after a nine-grader committed suicide in a bathroom in the Intermediate High School, according to CBS affiliate KOTV.

The 15-year-old was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after police received a report of shots fired, according to the report.

Police received the initial call at 8:35 a.m., reported the FOX affiliate, Fox23.com.

The superintendent of the school first confirmed the report of the suicide, according to reports.

Police refused to give any other details about the student, but said the school handled the incident well.

"The faculty did a tremendous, tremendous job that was on the verge of being flawless," a police official was quoted as saying. "Unfortunately a life was lost but it could have been a lot worse. "

Police were investigating the boy's suicide.
