Ecuador: 7 killed in Guayas floods

04-03-2013

QUITO, (Xinhua): At least seven people were killed after torrential rain triggered flash floods in Ecuador's western state of Guayas, local authorities said Sunday.

Guayas governor Viviana Bonilla told reporters that one person was drowned and another six people were killed by electric shocks in the flooding area, and a child is missing.

The intense rains in Guayas began Saturday afternoon and lasted until early Sunday morning. Flights were suspended at the local airport due to electric shocks.

Guayas' emergency committee was activated to take care of the flood victims, landslides and traffic accidents, Bonilla said. Two shelters were opened by local authorities to accommodate the affected people.

More heavy rains were expected and the death toll might increase in the next few hours, Bonilla added.
