Egypt: Clashes intensify in downtown Cairo

07-03-2013

Al-Masry Al-Youm:

Clashes between hundreds of demonstrators and security forces intensified in Simon Bolivar Square and near the US Embassy in downtown Cairo Wednesday evening.

The violence led to Qasr al-Nil bridge and Tahrir Square to close to trafic. The corniche road leading to and from downtown was also blocked.

Security forces fired tear gas in crowds, which had set several car tires on fire.

A number of masked demonstrators were also on scene, throwing tear gas canisters back at police.

Clashes between protesters and police renewed on Wednesday on the Nile Corniche south of Tahrir Square.

A number of protesters had also set some trees in front of the Arab League headquarters alight before firefighters put the fire out.
