British Muslim missing in Gujarat massacre feared dead

14-05-2002

Ananova :

Police searching for a British man ambushed during the Gujarat riots fear he may be dead.

DNA tests confirm bone fragments recovered in western India belong to Saeed Dawood of West Yorkshire.

The Foreign Office told Ananova it has asked for his name to be included in a murder investigation.

Mr Dawood, 41, was visiting India with three relatives from Batley when their minibus was attacked.

Mohammed Aswat Nallabhai died in February's incident, Imran Dawood needed hospital treatment and Shakil Dawood is still missing.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "The results from the laboratory appear to indicate the bone fragments do belong to Saeed Dawood.

"His family have been informed of the DNA results. We know how distressing this must be for them and will continue to offer our support."

The Foreign Office is keeping in touch with the Indian authorities, who are still searching for Shakil Dawood.
