Awards for Excellence
Alan Johnston
Alan Johnston is a BBC journalist who was kidnapped in Gaza and held prisoner for 114 days. During the time of his kidnapping he was the only foreign reporter from a major Western media organisation to be based in the area. Johnston joined the BBC in 1991, and spent eight years as a correspondent in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Kabul when Afghanistan was still under the control of the Taliban. Johnston has covered major stories in Gaza, including Israel’s unilateral disengagement plan in 2005, the 2006 Hamas election victory, the 2006 Israel-Gaza conflict, and the Palestinian factional violence of late 2006-2007. Johnston was awarded by Amnesty International for his radio reports on human rights in Gaza Back to awards index |
